Collector’s Alert: ASH SAVES OBAMA in stores tomorrow

If you don’t want to miss out on the next collectible Obama comic, you better camp out at your local comic shop tomorrow. New comics come in on Wednesdays and when they do Army of Darkness: Ash Saves Obama from Dynamite Entertainment will be among them.

Army of Darkness is, of course, the film franchise created by Sam Raimi (you know, the Spider-Man guy). Ash is, of course, the character created and played by Bruce Campbell (you know, the Burn Notice guy). Obama is, of course, the Main Man in Chief (you know, the health care re…never mind).

Get your copy tomorrow and ask for the Shepard Fairey-esque variant cover for extra collectiblity!

Art for Obama: BARACKSploitation, for a cause!

Perhaps nobody has been a bigger beneficiary of BARACKSploitation than Shepard Fairey, but at least the guy has channeled his attention to good causes, like raising money for the Main Man in Chief’s election campaign. We just learned that Fairey’s also the editor on the new book Art for Obama: Designing Manifest Hope and the Campaign for Change.

The book, co-edited with Jennifer Gross, showcases 150 of those powerful images from the campaign, including works created by well-known artists such as, Ron English, David Choe, Kwaku Alston, Maya Hayuk, Justin Hampton, and Shel Starkman. The Manifest Hope art shows, which took place in Denver during the Democratic National Convention and Washington DC preceding the inauguration, featured artists who used their talents to motivate the grassroots movement that carried Barack Obama to victory.

n conjunction with the themes of hope and change, all of the authors’ profits from this book will be donated to Americans for the Arts charity. It’s available in October: Art for Obama – $22.50 US / $29.50 CAN; ISBN: 978-0-8109-8498-1 – 150 full-color illustrations; 184 pages.

Mannie Garcia: Shepard Fairey BarackSploited Me!

You know the famous Shephard Fairey poster we all know and love? The one we like to riff on for our individual BarackSploitations? Well photographer Mannie Garcia filed court papers effectively saying, “Hold up a sec, Shep. That’s my photo you’re gettin’ rich and famous off of.”

Garcia has filed a suit claiming that he (and not the Associated Press and not Fairey) owns the photo that is the basis for the iconic poster. The photographer now HOPEs to score a cut of the bling-bling collected by Fairey.

Hope Progress Change

Artist Shepard Fairey created the ‘hope’ and ‘progress’ posters for sale on the obeygiant.com site. When the Obama campaign became aware of the posters, they requested their own version – the ‘change’ poster.
